Have you?<\/h3>\n<p>It invalidates the typical (secular) ideas of how religious and spiritual life emerged among humans.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14454\" alt=\"1005733_10151742803658130_874282299_n\" src=\"https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1005733_10151742803658130_874282299_n-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1005733_10151742803658130_874282299_n-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1005733_10151742803658130_874282299_n-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1005733_10151742803658130_874282299_n-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1005733_10151742803658130_874282299_n.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Social Anthropologists have, until now, thought that religion came <strong>after<\/strong> people began farming and wanted to gain control of their\u00a0unpredictable\u00a0environment. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It worked like this&#8230;so they thought&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Human stumbles on a new kind of mutated wheat that be more easily harvested.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 They kept the seeds and settled in areas to raise crops.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 They struggled against the harsh elements and began to think of wind, sun, rain, etc as superpowers (i.e. gods)&#8230;(superstitious folks).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 They tried to please and apprise the gods to gain better circumstances&#8230;and&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Boom&#8230;religion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve heard this theory before, right?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>To Witherington, this recent discovery shows that the need to reconcile with the divine is part of the human experience, not an invention that came at the advent of the agricultural age. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The religion of these high places helped begin civilization<\/strong>, not the other way around.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14453\" alt=\"1379537020-gobekli+tepe+2\" src=\"https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1379537020-gobekli+tepe+2-300x205.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1379537020-gobekli+tepe+2-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1379537020-gobekli+tepe+2-350x240.png 350w, https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1379537020-gobekli+tepe+2-150x102.png 150w, https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1379537020-gobekli+tepe+2-600x412.png 600w, https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1379537020-gobekli+tepe+2.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The oldest part of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/science.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/archaeology\/photos\/gobekli-tepe\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gobeckli<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>site is dated to 10,000-12,000 years ago and is the oldest temple ever found in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">That&#8217;s old&#8230;but how old?<\/p>\n<p>Wrap your brain around this!<\/p>\n<p>It was created before people were living in villages, farming, and before they had domesticated any animals (sheep, dogs, cattle, etc).<\/p>\n<p>People were wandering, gathering, hunting, and trying to connect to the divine&#8230;<em><strong>the whole time.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>As the highest point in the region and situated between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, I can&#8217;t help but wonder if Cain and Able used this very place. It could be just east of Eden. (LD)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, think of the age of this place this way:<\/p>\n<h3>The site dates to about 6,000 years <em><strong>before<\/strong><\/em> the Great Pyramids were created. It&#8217;s a time that precedes writing, by thousands of years.<\/h3>\n<h4>And yes, it&#8217;s pre-Noah and the flood.<\/h4>\n<p>Giant monoliths, the largest weighing about 50 tons (\u00a1 yikes !), depict a host of detailed carvings of animals. There are \u00a0also some stylized carvings of people dressed in priestly vestments. Even more tremendous are the enormous erected stones which have holes drilled into them to tie up animals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But, remember this is a pre-bronze age. Pre-iron age. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How long did it take to make a hole such as this in this rock with just another rock?<\/p>\n<p>These structures are made in a sophisticated fashion. Cave people were smarter than we assume.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s astonishing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14461\" alt=\"birds\" src=\"https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/birds.jpg\" width=\"288\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/birds.jpg 288w, https:\/\/lisadelay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/birds-150x108.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>But there are not just 1 of these 30 m. circles with 13 massive stones &#8230;they have found 17 of them. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Each takes about 3 years to\u00a0unearth. (<\/strong>Things are just starting to get interesting! In 50 years they still will not be finish. Much more surprises could be in store.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/G\u00f6bekli_Tepe\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Here&#8217;s the wikipeda article about the site.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to archeologists on the dig, the site was eventually backfilled (purposefully)\u00a0at a point in human development when villages were being established. It seems that local temples were used at that point.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">NOTE: (Witherington believes they were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> backfilled purposefully, but that the flood (in Noah&#8217;s time) moved sand up to the place from the Tigris River. I, personally, think that the flood would have ruined them and that they were indeed backfilled purposefully [for what specific reason, I don&#8217;t know]. To me, this burying is what preserved them so well so we could now find them intact. It&#8217;s a crazy amount of work to do such a thing, and I don&#8217;t know how they could, but the whole site baffles our understanding, so I haven&#8217;t ruled it out.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Dr Witherington concludes that because of the image of God within us, we desire to commune with God (or gods). We always have.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>All the ancient people groups had 3 things:<\/p>\n<p>1. Temples<\/p>\n<p>2. Priests<\/p>\n<p>3.
