In 2010, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Eastern. His adventures have taken him from the streets of Calcutta where he worked with Mother Teresa to the wealthy suburbs of Chicago where he served at the influential mega-church Willow Creek. As a peacemaker, his journeys have taken him to some of the most troubled regions of the world \u2013 from Rwanda to the West Bank \u2013 and he\u2019s been on peace delegations in Afghanistan and Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>Shane is a founder and board member of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesimpleway.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Simple Way<\/a>, a faith community in inner city Philadelphia that has helped birth and connect radical faith communities around the world. He is married to Katie Jo, a North Carolina girl who also fell in love with the city (and with Shane). They were wed in St. Edwards church, the formerly abandoned cathedral into which homeless families relocated in 1995, launching the beginning of the Simple Way community and a new phase of faith-based justice making.<\/p>\n<p>Shane writes and travels extensively speaking about peacemaking, social justice, and Jesus. Ever since then, he and his friends have been living in a communally within the neighborhood and\u00a0serving the residents there in many ways.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I ask Shane,\u00a0<strong>How have\u00a0they sustained their\u00a0communal lifestyle for so long?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shane shares some things that have helped:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. We\u00a0are not attached what it <em>should<\/em> look like in expression or form as much as we have chosen to love each other and Jesus well and allow community to flow out of that.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dietrich_Bonhoeffer\">Dietrich Bonhoeffer<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf you are in love with your vision for community you will actually destroy it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>2. Allowing it to change over the years, from a house with 12 people sleeping all over the place in one house with one bathroom to a village of 10 or 20 houses all in the same neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>3. Helpful wisdom from the outside from others who\u2019ve been doing communal living for a long time (The Benedictine order, for instance: 1,600 years)<\/p>\n<p>6:10<\/p>\n<p>What is \u201c<strong>new<\/strong> monasticism\u201d anyway? Shane explains.<\/p>\n<p>6:30<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFolks are really hungry for community.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>7:20<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn Western culture we\u2019ve lost the art of community.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other parts of the world this <strong>is<\/strong> how people have survived.<\/p>\n<p>7:40<\/p>\n<p>Economically impoverished communities can be community-rich (places) because they need each other.<\/p>\n<p>7:50<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s no coincidence that in some of the richest places in the world we have the highest rates of loneliness..and\u00a0depression, and suicide.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>8:00<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are made to love and be loved.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>8:20<\/p>\n<p>Even the mega-churches put in a lot of effort into making small groups work well (because that\u2019s how you find community).<\/p>\n<p>8:40<\/p>\n<p>New Monasticism (as lived out in the U.S. or other wealthy Western countries) connects us with <strong>an ancient practice<\/strong> that continues on (and is &#8220;life as normal&#8221;) in many places in the world.<\/p>\n<p>9:20<\/p>\n<p>What communal living in Christian communities looks like in different contexts&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Sometimes it\u2019s about renouncing materialism and the Kardashians.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>10:00<\/p>\n<p>What happens when people pilgrimage to The Simple Way to learn what it\u2019s about.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesimpleway.org\/resources\/\">Click for resources from<em> The Simple Way<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>10:30<\/p>\n<p>On the romantic notions of The Simple Way&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mother Teresa said, \u201cCalcuttas are everywhere if we only have eyes to see. Find your Calcutta.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>11:00<\/p>\n<p>There is a wisdom\u00a0in learning from other communities. Shane and others\u00a0set up a network\u00a0called\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.communityofcommunities.info\" target=\"_blank\">community of communities<\/a> on the web which lists other communities like his. Example:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rebaplacefellowship.org\" target=\"_blank\">Reba Place Chicago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>11:35<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thesimpleway.org\/connecting\/\">MissionYear.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This way can get rid of the romanticism and allow people to experience communal living first-hand.<\/p>\n<p>Monthly open houses at A Simple Way are\u00a0on ramps (to learn about community).<\/p>\n<p>12:20<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s about not just believing the doctrinal statements but about living differently and finding out what that looks like.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>13:15<\/p>\n<p>We are called to not be conformed to this world. God wants us to use our gifts and talents.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNon conformity doesn\u2019t mean uniformity.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>13;30<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the 2007 fire that destroyed his home and many other homes\u2013leaving about 100 families with nowhere to sleep and live.<\/strong> Shane was left in need within the community he helped.<\/p>\n<p>The very surprising statement the Red Cross relief worker told him.<\/p>\n<p>14:00<\/p>\n<p>There are 700 abandon factories and 20,00 abandon houses nearby.<\/p>\n<p>15:30<\/p>\n<p>Their community has built a park, a greenhouse, green spaces for gardens. Don\u2019t stock up your treasure that moths&#8230; and fires&#8230; can burn up and destroy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>17:10<\/p>\n<p>Ministry is mutual and if we don\u2019t have needs we can\u2019t be blessed. (Lisa)<\/p>\n<p>18:30<\/p>\n<p>One of Shane&#8217;s favorite quotes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve just come to help me, you\u2019re wasting your time. But, if you\u2019ve come because your survival and mine are bound up together, then let\u2019s hold hands and we\u2019ll work together.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>18:40<\/p>\n<p>This quote comes in and corrects the posture by which we\u2019ve often come <em>on a mission<\/em> to help people and thinking with a\u00a0wrong perspective.<\/p>\n<p>19:20<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>His friend says, \u201cWe are born on third base, but we think we\u2019ve hit a triple.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>21:30<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t need has much as we think we do.<\/p>\n<p>21:40<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>On Shane&#8217;s take of the story of &#8220;the rich young ruler&#8221;:<br \/>\nHe wants to <em>inherit<\/em> the kingdom (entitlement thinking).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(QUICK LINK: Read the short Bible story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+10%3A17-27&amp;version=NASB\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>22:10<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFor folks that are independent and self-sustaining it&#8217;s hard for us to know that we need God and other people.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>22:30<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<strong>Independence<\/strong> is not a gospel value. We need interdependence. It\u2019s good to need other people and to need God.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>23:30<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Besides people wondering what happened to his dreadlocks, people ask Shane\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">this<\/span> question the most.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>24:20<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we have to challenge our location. (The places) where we (live) end up or are built around (that which)\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">counters<\/span>\u00a0(opposes) gospel values.<strong><em>\u00a0Like &#8220;suburban sprawl&#8221; which was created to get away from the urban problems (we should work to fix) and keep us from\u00a0doing good for others who need it most.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s about living a life, not where we do great things, but where we do small things with great love (Mother Teresa). <strong>It\u2019s not how much we do, but how much love we put into every act<\/strong> (of serving God).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>25:00<\/p>\n<p>We must ask:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What are\u00a0my skills and passions and how might they connect to this world\u2019s pain and injustice?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Whether it\u2019s being a doctor, lawyer, plumber, or whatever, simply do your part.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>26:00<\/p>\n<p>What REALLY happens to the &#8220;dreds&#8221;.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Thank you, Shane!
