The beginners thinks, \u201cWhat\u2019s good for me.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/media1.biola.edu\/rosemead\/faculty\/cvs\/john_coe.pdf\">John H Coe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Doug explains the Dark Night of the Soul, the important next stage of spiritual development, in keen and helpful detail.<\/p>\n<p>7:00<\/p>\n<p>God starts at the first stage (in a place of joy and thrill in God) and allows us delight in spiritual things and feed on &#8220;mother&#8217;s milk&#8221; spiritually.<\/p>\n<p>Next, God helps us get used to our baby teeth\u00a0<strong>by moving us to love God for God\u2019s sake.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John of the Cross takes the 7 deadly sins and show how they can happen to us in a spiritual sense.<\/p>\n<p>8:10<\/p>\n<p>God is weening us away from nursing and from\u00a0spiritual milk. Like a\u00a0baby, we may misunderstand and feel unloved or unnoticed, at first.<\/p>\n<p>9:00<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Commodified<\/em><\/strong> is the Dark Night of the Soul in Amercian Evangelicalism. The phrase itself is\u00a0often used inexactly.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>It\u2019s not feeling sad or a string of bad\u00a0things have happened for which we feel upset and confused.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>BUT&#8212;It is that without cause we feel God has abandon us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It is not a loss of faith, nor not depression, nor a felt distance\u00a0because of sin.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It was also an analysis of depression 400 years before\u00a0Freud!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>11:00<\/p>\n<p><strong>God withdraws sensible (sensory, felt) affects. The dark night of the senses. (first phase).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>12:30<\/p>\n<p><em>Maybe it feels like prayers are bouncing off the ceiling. Maybe it feels that songs or sermons that had made an affect no longer do. This sense of loss will be different for each person.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>13:30<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, the delight in God disappears.<\/p>\n<p>13:00<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mistakenly, we often may try to shock people back into spiritual infancy with a method, tactic, or suggestion that seems like it might cause feeling once again. (like a book, a conference, a service, etc)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>14:10<\/p>\n<p>The spiritual advice from John is to not abandon your spiritual practices (like prayer, fellowship, meditation, service, etc) continue to obey God and carry on until you pass through the night. They won\u2019t be fun, but you continue for God\u2019s sake, not your own.<\/p>\n<p>Then you can come out on the other side to the stage of the Proficient. (Though the stages are actually more\u00a0porous.)<\/p>\n<p>15:00<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 2nd stage is where John says most of us get and hardly proceed from.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2nd dark night, is rare, and is horrible and includes a bewilderment and even a loss of faith in God and one comes out with a much richer deeper faith and far more settled and fuller understanding of God.<\/p>\n<p>John Coe using\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/niv\/1_john\/2.htm\" target=\"_blank\">1 John 2:12-14<\/a> explains the stages as well.<\/p>\n<p>18:00<\/p>\n<p>John of the Cross found this understanding through terrible suffering and imprisonment and he saw the spiritual connection.<\/p>\n<p>19:30<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the Dark Night of the Soul, spiritual answers are obscured and things are hidden from view.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Walking by faith and not sight.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>22:00<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you can\u2019t find the answers it doesn\u2019t mean that something went wrong, it\u2019s just that you can see right now. There will be a lack of certainty.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>22:30<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Stick with the basics in the dark night.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>23:30<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the dark night we aren\u2019t doubting our Faith, or God, but but we are doubting our understanding of God and our Faith.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The call is to obey God and persist in our ways as before. Eventually a dawn will come.<\/p>\n<p>23:00<\/p>\n<p>In this stage, we jettison things that are\u00a0not core, central and true and come to understand God in a better way.<\/p>\n<p>BE WARNED: Others may feel anxious to get you back in to where you were.<\/p>\n<p>24:00<\/p>\n<p><strong>Backsliding is not the same thing as a Dark Night experience. The Dark Night is progression.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>24:30<\/p>\n<p>Prophets in the OT go through the dark night times.<\/p>\n<p>25:00<\/p>\n<p><em>Using a different lens to see what is already there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>26:00<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>Elijah after Mt Carmel<\/p>\n<p>Apostle Paul<\/p>\n<p>Job<\/p>\n<p>Jesus (wilderness and Gethsemane)<\/p>\n<p>Jesus \u201clearned obedience\u201d and the the will of God was not pleasant<\/p>\n<p>We all go through these types of dark nights<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>28:00<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>John of the Cross&#8217;s work was (and is)\u00a0written for [spiritual]\u00a0<strong>guides<\/strong>\u00a0(leaders) so they can recognize what is happening and to know what not to do.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>30:00<\/p>\n<p>Some mystical-style theologians have been hijacked and grafted into a different (sometimes New Age) model of how the reality is ( i.e. &#8220;divided self&#8221;.)<\/p>\n<p>30:30<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Devil &#8211; So what about the Devil which is a prominent feature in the writings?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A CAUTION:<\/p>\n<p>John takes the readers&#8217; Christian theology for already granted. The basic Christian theology was assumed because that was the background and beliefs of\u00a0his audience.<\/p>\n<p>32:00<\/p>\n<p>Doug answers\u2026Devil with a Big \u201cD\u201d questions. Different mistakes in different times.<\/p>\n<p>38:30<\/p>\n<p>Our cultural and worldview will effect our beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>39:00<\/p>\n<p>How do we get through the Dark Night?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is up to God as a Grace. Our only job is to remain faithful.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alibris.com\/search\/books\/author\/Francis-Kelly-Nemeck?aid=3606954\" target=\"_blank\">Father Francis Kelly Nemeck<\/a><\/p>\n<p>41:00<\/p>\n<p>The promise is (found in Scripture and from those who\u2019ve gone ahead of us in the Faith) that we come out (into dawn) and see the value of what we went through.<\/p>\n<p>God says to Job: I\u2019m God and you are not.<\/p>\n<p>Job says, \u201cNow I have seen you. I spoke out of turn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>42:00<\/p>\n<p>A word of hope for those in the dark night.<\/p>\n<p>1. Those in the dark night bless those around them and their pride does not effect this because of the Night itself. We are spiritual protected.<\/p>\n<p>43:00<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the Dark Night we don\u2019t get to be proud of our humility.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Be faithful know that God is using you and wait it out.<\/p>\n<p>43:30<\/p>\n<p>Modern example Mother Teresa. She lived most of her life with a sense of abandonment by God.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I ever become a Saint I will be a Saint of Darkness, facing the dark to guide souls to the light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>44:00<\/p>\n<p>People were drawn to her service and work for God even though she felt God\u2019s silence.<\/p>\n<p>45:00<\/p>\n<p>On her critics who say she stopped believing in God.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Hitchens wrote slanderously about her and others in his book \u201cThe Missionary Position\u201d. He said she did have the courage to admit publicly that she didn\u2019t believe in God and never had.<\/p>\n<p>46:00<\/p>\n<p>Mother Teresa\u2013her fruit shows otherwise (it&#8217;s sow belief and faithfulness).<\/p>\n<p>Apostasy is a deliberate walking away from God which is a danger of misunderstanding the Dark Night. This is why trained and wise spiritual guides are essential.<\/p>\n<p>47:00<\/p>\n<p>C.S. Lewis character Screwtape urges: \u201cUse the word \u201cphase\u201d to tell him he had it all wrong\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>In a genuine Dark Night, we may think we have abandon God or want to and then find ourselves incapable of it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>48:00<\/p>\n<p>Doubt in God is like holding a volleyball underwater with just one hand and senses all the force and then thinking there is no volleyball because it cannot be seen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe aren\u2019t working without a net and we won\u2019t fall out of the arms of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>49:00<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are in the Dark Night\u2026(it helps) remembering \u201cit\u2019s a thing, a\u00a0documented thing\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>49:30<\/p>\n<p>Walking in the footsteps of those who\u2019ve gone before.<\/p>\n<p>51:00<\/p>\n<p>What to do if you are in the throes of it all. best advice.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Foster\u2019s advice in the Celebration of Discipline. It can hurt our spiritual reputation. God is drawing us into\u00a0obedience and\u00a0faith in the absence of feeling.
