She surprised many when she said she hoped to be disabled in <strong>heaven<\/strong>. She died at age 44 of congenital lung cancer, but not before she made huge inroads for the Rights and Dignity of the Disabled, and penned a groundbreaking book about understanding disability, and suffering, in light of God, and his nature.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2388\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2388\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lifeasprayer.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/22eiesland01-190.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2388\" title=\"22eiesland01-190\" src=\"http:\/\/lifeasprayer.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/22eiesland01-190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"215\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nancy Eiesland 1965-2009<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><em>Article excerpt on Eiesland\u00a0from the &#8220;Scotsman&#8221; publication:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By the time of her death, Eiesland had come to believe God was disabled, a view she articulated in her influential 1994 book, <em>The Disabled God: Toward a Liberatory Theology of Disability<\/em>. She pointed to the scene described in Luke 24:36-39 in which the risen Jesus invites his disciples to touch his wounds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In presenting his impaired body to his startled friends, the resurrected Jesus is revealed as the disabled God,&#8221; she wrote.
