It&#8217;s surprised me to learn about this.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a love\/hate thing, and I think it&#8217;s a bit <strong>more common than either one of us realize<\/strong>. The description may surprise you, too. When you read it, co-workers, family members, friends, acquaintances, neighbors will come to mind, and you&#8217;ll think, &#8220;Whoa, you can <em>diagnose<\/em> this, for real?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia describes BPD as a prolonged disturbance of personality function <strong>characterized by depth and variability of moods.<sup id=\"cite_ref-millon_0-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borderline_personality_disorder#cite_note-millon-0\">[n 1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Usually the disorder involves unusual levels of instability in\u00a0<a title=\"Mood (psychology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mood_(psychology)\">mood<\/a>;\u00a0<a title=\"False dilemma\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/False_dilemma\">black and white thinking<\/a>, or\u00a0<a title=\"Splitting (psychology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Splitting_(psychology)\">splitting<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The disorder often manifests itself in\u00a0<a title=\"Idealization and devaluation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Idealization_and_devaluation\">idealization and devaluation<\/a>\u00a0episodes, as well as chaotic and unstable\u00a0<a title=\"Interpersonal relationship\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interpersonal_relationship\">interpersonal relationships<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Self-image\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Self-image\">self-image<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Identity (social science)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Identity_(social_science)\">identity<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Human behavior\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_behavior\">behavior<\/a>; as well as a disturbance in the individual&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Psychological identity\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychological_identity\">sense of self<\/a>. In extreme cases, this disturbance in the sense of self can lead to periods of\u00a0<a title=\"Dissociation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dissociation\">dissociation<\/a>, self-harm, or violence.<sup id=\"cite_ref-DSM-IV-TR_1-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borderline_personality_disorder#cite_note-DSM-IV-TR-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>BPD\u00a0<a title=\"Splitting (psychology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Splitting_(psychology)\">splitting<\/a>\u00a0(all-or-nothing thinking) includes a switch between idealizing and demonizing others.<\/strong>\u00a0Obviously, this, combined with mood disturbances, can undermine relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Sound like anyone you know?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Does this mean extremism is a mental disorder? hum?<\/p>\n<p>Some Symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fear of being abandoned<\/li>\n<li>Feelings of emptiness and boredom<\/li>\n<li>Frequent displays of inappropriate anger<\/li>\n<li>Impulsiveness with interests, money, substance abuse, sexual relationships, binge eating, or shoplifting<\/li>\n<li>Intolerance of being alone<\/li>\n<li>Repeated crises and acts of self-injury, such as wrist cutting or overdosing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;\">Treatment and medication are helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px; color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;\">More <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/PMH0001931\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>:<br \/>\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/\">National Center for Biotechnology Information<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/\">U.S. National Library of Medicine<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you find this information interesting?
