I wrote this on April 10th at Jesus Needs New PR.
April 10th:
I think many people will be surprised at how much [lady gaga’s] new album, coming May 23th, will have religious references, and inspire spiritual thought and discussion.
Also strange is that she’ll communicate using this type of God language to an audience that is, unlike her… as a child, *alien* to church (institutional or otherwise), biblical stories and references to God from scripture. This may revive these topics making far easier to engage her and her fans. Hopefully on a common starting ground (not like was done in [the fundie] example.)
Be assured, God will use Gaga as *he* wishes. Believe it.
It is his spirit that draws us to him. Why is she interested in these topics no ones cares about these days? Maybe because Gaga may be starting the conversation that God will use for mighty things. I will pray toward that.
UPDATE: APRIL 15th.
I wonder if this song (Judas) and the others from her album will prompt listeners to read the gospels to better decipher her message. Being raised as a Fundie, I know my Bible pretty well, and now having heard the Gaga lyrics, to “Judas”, it even makes me want to check out the several stories she refers to, to see what’s up. She brings up Peter’s betrayal, the anointing at Bethany (think wiping her tears with her hair), Judas’ betrayal, among some of her lyrics.
I find the references jumbled and confusing. Maybe she’ll decode them in the future. You can read them all here.
Here is the lyrics to the Bridge of her song JUDAS:
[Bridge]
In the most Biblical sense,
I am beyond repentance
Fame hooker, prostitute wench, vomits her mind
But in the cultural sense
I just speak in future tense
Judas kiss me if offenced,
Or wear an ear condom next time
I wanna love you,
But something’s pulling me away from you
Jesus is my virtue,
Judas is the demon I cling to
I cling to
Your responses to Gaga and her newest message?
I’m sure God can use the unrighteous. He has in the past….so, why not now?
He used the Greeks conquering much of the known world in order to make a way for the message of the Kingdom to be spread quickly and fluidly throughout the region….
He used the “dark ages” to stir up a passion for Truth…
Why not use Gaga….
There is nothing scriptural to suggest that God can’t use the unrighteous for His Glory….besides, if we don’t praise Him – the very ROCKS will cry out….conversely – if we don’t do what He calls us to do, He will send someone else (even if they don’t know it).
We’re all created in His image….
I wasn’t in church a whole lot growing up, so I was decidedly lacking in exposure to Biblical references when I became an English major in college. I decided I had better play catch-up, for that reason if no other. So the first book of the Bible I read from beginning to end was Job. (Bwahahahaha!)
I predict she’ll show up at the next MTV awards wearing a dress made entirely from pieces of silver. And while I value biblical accuracy, I hope there are more than thirty . . .
That’s quite funny, Doug. hahaaa
No doubt God can work with and/or through whomever he chooses, righteous or unrighteous. I guess I would question whether it is our place to decide which category a person fits in. Yes we know by fruit, etc etc, and to be sure I don’t follow her every move or all the press on her. But…
Lady Gaga like so many others is an amazingly complex individual. That doesn’t make her unique – her complexity is just more out there and on display. It sure sounds like she has many questions and who knows where she is really at deep down inside? She is not entirely my cup of tea although I see her as amazingly talented. I’m certainly interested to see where things go with her and definitely going to avoid judgment.
Agreed.
Huh, yeah Lady Gaga is an interesting character. I agree that this album sounds like it will be an interesting ground for breeding questions about faith and religion. Though I wonder if the fruit of such music is not more often rotten than righteous. A lot of music artists out there have twisted or degenerate biblical themes in their lyrics, yet sadly, I would think the result is much more often a negative one (spiritual confusion, biblical misunderstandings, reinforcing negative ideas about God/Christianity) than a positive one (seeking God).
