HA! Poetry in Motion, Sumo Style?

750 lbs doing the impossible.

I know what you’re thinking, “I never realized the beauty of Sumo wrestling.” Or maybe you’re thinking, “This is pure poetry in motion.” Or perhaps you’re thinking, “I wish I could scrub my brain!”

Would you like me to make a spiritual connection here? uh. Yeah. Sure… No problem.

This photo illustrates fat spiritual babies. Even when doing great there is still a hefty…ahem…amount of observable foolishness. (Old timers may remember Amy Grant’s little ditty, Fat Baby. Age to Age album 1982. Can you hear this music in the background? Read the fascinating lyrics here. (They don’t write them like this much anymore.) Link to video of live performance here. It’s worth it to see the early 80s hairdos.)

Leave any thoughts or comments! :)

  1. First of all….*eek*…that’s a terrifying picture… =O

Second, I am reminded of Hebrews 5:11-6:3. A passage in scripture that I have long mis-understood….

For years, I thought this passage meant that we as Christians need to grow in understanding of the “deeper” things in the faith – moving up from foundational truths and doctrines….and while that is the goal of a Christian in their walk and life, to understand the ‘deeper’ things – this passage is about the Christian who only feeds from the pulpit….

Milk vs solid food is the issue. In a nutshell – milk is reconstituted food….Milk is second hand-food. Solid food is what we chew on and digest ourselves. Spiritual milk is revelation from the Word that someone else chewed on and digested, regurgitated and reconstituted for our consumption…a message from “the pulpit”…while the solid food is what the LORD speaks and reveals directly to us through His Spirit and His Word that we chew & digest on our own…and the reconstitute as needed to feed the hungry where-ever we are….

Too many Christians settle for reconstituted revelation…and while a message from the pulpit is necessary and good – it is not what The LORD wants for His people, and ultimately how The Kingdom is come to Earth….

  2. PS. I like the end of the Amy Grant song….

He’s just a fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, fa-at, fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, fat, fa-at, fat, FAT, FAT, FAT, FAT, FAT, FAT, FAAAAAT……baby…

    So poetic…..

  3. This meaning of milk as “second-hand revelation” would seem to make more sense of verses 13 and 14.

But rather than “regurgitated and reconstituted,” it’s more like “made into mother’s milk and breastfed.” Which may not be any more aesthetically appealing to many 20th/early 21st century Western minds, but I think the Hebrews would have remembered breastfeeding fondly (as having continued well past the age of one) as a nurturing experience for children not ready to move on to the next stage of maturity, at least not exclusively to solid food.

Which makes me wonder… once you are “mature” enough to read the word on your own, does that make it a natural reaction to be a little put off at times by second-hand interpretations, from the pulpit or otherwise? Hmm…

  4. Oh…nursing babies of course….

Really, we all need milk. It’s a necessity in our diet – both physically and spiritually. The problem is…as we grow, if we only drink milk we will not find the nourishment we need. We need to get to a point where we can chew and digest food on our own….and have some milk with our cookies from time to time as a treat. :)
